#throwbackthursday: Flying doors

The first sprint race at the Slovakia Ring was underway. Local Miro Konopka with LMP1 led the race and behind him was a battle of Gran Turismo cars. Dennis Waszek in the yellow Lamborghini Super Tropheo GTC from GT2 Motorsport team held the position just ahead of Libor Milota in the Mercedes AMG GT3. Ten minutes to go. Both competitors were just driving on the long straight in the start and finish area, where GT cars reach speeds over 250 km/h. And at that moment it happened. The Lamborghini’s driver’s side door suddenly flew into the air and shattered on the track. The safety car had to go on the circuit, and before the starting field slowed down, Stanislaw Jedlinski with Ferrari drove overt the debris.

Against all odds, Dennis Waszek continued. He followed the safety car and as soon as the restart came, he was determined to finish the race on the first place. Although he slowed down considerably and it was really windy in his cockpit, he continued to maintain a comfortable lead over Petr Brecka with Porsche. He crossed the checkered flag in first place in the GTC category, but was soon given a 30-second penalty by the race stewards for overtaking under yellow flags, resulting in dropping to seventh place in the category. Although he still collected important points on his way to the GTC title.
